Coeliac Disease is an auto immune disorder which is triggered on consumption of gluten. This condition is also known as gluten-sensitive enteropathy or sprue.
Gluten is a protein generally found in foods made with wheat, barley, or rye. It is also found in certain medications, vitamins & lipstick. When patients with coeliac disease consume gluten, their immune system attacks & damages Villi, tiny projections that line the small intestine. As a result, body fails to absorb nutrients properly into the body.
People with Coeliac disease are advised to eliminate all forms of gluten from their diet. It includes baked products, breads & beer where gluten is used as a stabilising ingredient.
